Linux

Linux is a family of operating systems that are based on the linux kernel. The linux kernal is the core of the operating system and is responsible for managing the computer’s hardware and software. Linux is open - source, meaning that the source code is freely available for anyone to view, modify, and distribute. This makes linux a very flexible and customizable operating system.

How it started..

Linux started out as a variant for the IBM PC – intel 80386 architecture. Linus Torvalds, a Finnish student of computer science, wrote in initial version. He posted the early version of linux on the internet in 1991. Since then, number of people have collaborated to the development of linux. It became an early alternative to other UNIX workstations, such as those offered by Sun Microsystems and IBM.

Linux Commands.

Unlike GUIs found on windows or macOS, linux relies heavily on commands entered through a terminal window. Linux commands are instructions used to interact with the linux operating system and perform various tasks. Some of the popular linus commands are -

  • Is : this command is used to list the contents of a directory.

  • cd: this command is used to change directories.

  • pwd: this command displays the full path of the current working directory.

  • mkdir: this command is used to create new directories.

  • cp: this command is used to copy files and directories.

  • mv: this command is used to move or rename files and directories.

  • rm: this command is used to delete files and directories. Use with caution!

  • cat: this command displays the contents of a text file.

  • grep: this command is used to search for text patterns in files.

  • sudo: this command is used to execute commands with superuser privileges (administrator access).

These were the few important linux commands. This Linux terminal window looks like -

 file.

Why Linux?

When comparing linux with the popular operating systems available in a market i.e. windows and macOS, linux emerges as a strong option for users due to its various functionalities

  • Customization : linux offers a wide range of distributions tailored to specific needs, from gaming to security

  • Cost : free and open – source software eliminates licensing cost

  • Security : linux is known for its robust security features and frequent updates.

  • Privacy : linux offers more control over user data and privacy compared to closed-source systems.

Did you know?

Here’s a fun fact about linux : even though linux powers most supercomputers globally, it almost had a different name? The creator, Linus Torvalds, initially wanted to call it Freax – a combination of “free”, “freak”, and “unix”. Thankfully, it was changed to Linux!

In conclusion, linux is a powerful and versatile operating system offering numerous advantages for users who value customization, security, and cost effectiveness. While it may have a steeper learning curve compared to other options, the vast community suuport and wealth of resources make it a rewarding choice for those willing to explore.
