ART AND CULTURE OF VRINDAVAN
Vrindavan, also spelt Vrindaban and Brindaban, is a historical city in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is one of the most sacred places in Vaishnavism.It is located in the Braj Bhoomi region, and is where, according to Hinduism, Krishna spent most of his childhood days.The city is about 11 km from Mathura, Krishna's birthplace.The town hosts many temples dedicated to the worship of Radha and Krishna.
People
The cultural and lifestyle of the people of Vrindavan mainly revolves around Krishna and his tales. The people of the region are also referred as Brajvasi and their culture is known as Braj culture. They are very simple living and traditional by nature and begin their day with the worship of Radha-Krishna.
Religion and Language
Vrindavan is a sacred place by all the traditions of Hinduism. The most prominent religious tradition here is Vaishnavism. Besides, it also has been an active center of Buddhism, Jainism and Brahmanism. BrajBhasha, Hindi and English are the main languages spoken in Vrindavan.
Fairs and Festivals
A number of colorful fairs and festivals make the town of Vrindavan alive all round the year. Janamashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna is celebrated here with great pomp and show accompanied with vibrant dances, bhajans and raslilas. JhulanPurnima is also an important festival during which idols of Radha-Krishna are kept on a decorated swing and are offered sweets and fruits. The colorful festival of Holi is celebrated in the different parts of Braj for several days. The Brahmotsava Festival is held for 10 days after Holi and a huge number of visitors gather at Brij to witness the festivities. Other famous festivals are BasantPanchami, RathkaMela, Nandotsava, Radha Ashtami, Deepawali, Govardhan Puja, HariyaliTeej etc.
Food
The cuisine of Vrindavan is pure vegetarian with special significance to milk and milk products especially butter. Kachori and jalebi is the most common breakfast in Vrindavan. Besides, the city is also famous for its spicy, mouth watering chat and sweet 'pede'.
