WHAT IS MODERN OPERATING SYSTEM?
--> A modern operating system (OS) is a software system that manages computer hardware,
software resources, and provides common services for computer programs. It acts as an
intermediary between applications and the hardware, ensuring efficient and secure utilization
     of resources.

WHAT IS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OPERATING SYSTEM AND MODERN OPERATING SYSTEM?

Operating System (OS):
1)Definition: An operating system is a fundamental software component that manages hardware and software resources on a computer system.
2)Basic features: Traditional operating systems perform essential tasks like managing memory, scheduling processes, handling input/output operations, and providing a user interface.

Modern Operating System:
1)Definition: A modern operating system refers to advanced OSes developed with enhanced features, scalability, and support for contemporary computing needs.
2)Advanced Features: Modern OSes support multitasking, multiprocessing, graphical user interfaces (GUIs), virtual memory management, and file systems with advanced security features.

Modern operating systems are integral to our daily lives in numerous ways as folows:-
1)Desktops and Laptops: Working systems including Windows, Mac OS, as well as numerous types of Linux continue to be the software powering the computers by which we work, play, and interact.
2)Smartphones: Smartphones use primarily two operating systems, Android represented by Samsung, Google Pixel, etc., and iOS – iPhone.
3)Gaming Consoles: Current generation gaming consoles such as PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch come with customized Operating Systems: PlayStation operates a modified FreeBSD, Xbox uses a modified Windows kernel while Nintendo Switch uses a Custom Operating System.
4)Smart Home Devices: Embedded systems like Linux used in smart home devices including Amazon’s Echo, Android Things together with some other closed systems in smart home devices including thermostats, Web Cams, and Door Locks.
5)Web Browsers: Operating systems such as Windows, macOS, Linux, etc., help in running browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, and Safari for viewing the web sites and web apps.
Social Media Apps: Android & iOS drive apps like – Facebook, Instagram, twitter, supporting services that enable social communications, sharing of content and information exchange.
6)Schools and Universities: Operating system can be found on computers and tablets that students and educators utilize for research, online classes, and applications which support education.

Modern Operating System Types :

1)Single-user, Single-tasking: These operating systems have only one user and the same a single program to execute at time. E.g. early MS-DOS versions
2)Single-user, Multi-tasKing : This OS allows a single user to run many programs at once. This encompasses the majority of desktop operating systems, particularly most commercial and proprietary ones such as Windows, macOS a few Linux distributions.
3)Multi user : One of the most important and common type operating systems that allows multiple users to access a computer system simultaneously. It is typically used in server environments where many users require access to common data. Different versions of Unix and Linux distributions for example
4)Real-time Operating Systems (RTOS) : RTOS are intended for real-time applications that process data multiple times, with rigid scheduling needs and often significantly lower time to responsibilities or input from configuration. They need to be used in embedded systems, industrial control systems and other kinds of applications where timing is critical.
5)Network Operating Systems: This is a type of OS that specifically design to support network functions, and enables computers connected in the same local area networks (LANs) or wide Are Networks(WAN). Some of these include Novell NetWare, Windows Server and a variety or Unix/Linux server distributions.
