The 5 great presentation tips

Thde 5 great presentation tips in this article will enable you to create and deliver a powerful and effective presentation. 1.    Understand the purpose of your presentation In any presentation you do, always start with the goal. Understand first why you are doing that particular presentation and what you hope to accomplish withit. What is it you want from your audience as a result of your presentation? Do want them to agree to your recommendations? Or their views on the same? Make your purpose explicit at the start, that way your audience will stay tuned in for what you want from them.  For your audience to act on what you said they need first to understand why they should take action. Therefore, you have to be clear about why you are making that presentation and how you expect the audience to utilize what you share. In most cases, lack of clarity on the purpose of presentations is what makes most of them fail. It is often one of the reasons why audiences don’t take action on what you say. Remember the brain can easily focus on three things at one time. Once you get past that people, have a tendency to take NO ACTION and stay status quo instead. So keep it simple, keep it focused, and keep it about them and not you. 2.    Create your presentation outline Another way to make your presentation a success is by creating an outline for what you intend to present. It is much safer to write down your speech or just note down key pointers. These notes will be helpful when you forget your keynotes on stage. In such a situation, you can just go back to your notes and pick up from where you left. You however should avoid reading from your notes throughout the presentation. It will leave a bad impression on your audience as they might think you have not prepared enough for the presentation. The best way to avoid scripting is through writing an outline of the key points in the order that you will present them. Make sure any stories of analogies you will use you have the “key points” in bullet point so you can incorporate them all. Then allow your brain to freely tell the story and points as you need to at that moment with that audience. An outline will significantly help you to stay authentically involved with your current audience and your current material. It also keeps you from getting “brain fades” where your brain freezes because you switched words around or the order of what you say. 3.    Create your introduction and conclusion Another one of our presentation tips is to write a short introduction and conclusion for your presentation. The introduction is meant to clarify your presentation and what people should expect throughout the period of the presentation. It is supposed to keep them hooked and engaged. An introduction will tell your audience where you are going; it is improper to make them guess what the next 90 or 60 minutes is going to be about because this might confuse, lose or even annoy the audience. Remember that they need to know exactly why they should listen to you. As a manager, your audience will often comprise of employees who have tasks to do, executives whose is far more precious and fellow managers who just like you, have tons of management responsibilities to take care of. Therefore, a clear introduction of the presentation will allow them to give you their attention and a conclusion will also make them appreciate having been a part of the audience. Of importance is to ensure that your introduction is compelling enough to keep the audience hooked and the conclusion should also be sufficiently strong to compel them into taking action. 4.    Develop clear transitions When making your presentation, you need to develop clear transitions between sentences and ideas. This will help the audience move with you as you shift from one idea to the next. Without clear transitional statements, your audience may get confused the moment you move to the next idea, and thus the effectiveness of the presentation might be lost. Be clear on your points; is it your first second or third? If you are supporting or elaborating an idea, you should ensure that your audience follows through. Phrases like, “to elaborate on my first point,” “my first point is,” and “let’s move to the second point,” will help to keep the audience attentive and allow them to follow in on the speech. 5.    Practice extensively Amongst all different presentation tips, this is the BIG one. Great presenters make it all look very natural and easy. However, if you ask them, you will find that they rehearse their presentation aloud at least three times before doing it live. This way they are confident that they know the content and can focus on delivering it in a polished and professional way. Over a period of time, these presenters can deliver anything with confidence. Practice makes man (or woman) perfect. In preparing for a presentation, you should try as much as possible to familiarize yourself with the content of the presentation, even more than the content of the assignment. You can spice up the presentation by adding bits of humor, that if you can handle it, stories and most of all, be chatty and informal. If you do this, you too will find that you are far more confident, less hesitant and able to protect yourself and your ideas more powerfully and effectively. Conclusion These are some good practices to help improve your presentation skills. Practicing these presentation tips will improve your presentation skills, and help you communicate more efficiently.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROCESS – A GUIDE FOR MANAGERS

CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROCESS – A GUIDE FOR MANAGERS. The career development process involves different career transition phases. Deciding on a major while in college or choosing a particular career direction can be very overwhelming. However, understanding the whole process makes careers control and development a very easy process that consists of five basic sections: 1) SELF-ASSESSMENT FOR CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROCESS : At this stage, a person responds to a very important question; who am I? To answer it effectively, one needs to understand what motivates him, his/her values, interests, skills and personality. This type of assessment can be informal i.e. through the learning experience and, or counselling or formal i.e. through career assessment inventories. When doing self-assessment it is therefore important to find responses to the following questions; o   What do I like doing when am free? o   What is my most interesting career? o   What are my natural skills and activities? o   If I could do anything else without money consideration, what could that be? o   What makes me lose track of time? o   What activities do I consider most important? The main aim of the above self-assessment questions is to be able to understand oneself clearly with regards to values, personality, skills and interests so as to interconnect or interrelate to different careers. 2) EXPLORATION OF OPTIONS FOR CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROCESS : After the assessment skills, values and interests, it is important to learn more about different career types. Information required for career exploration can be obtained from different platforms some of which include print publications and online media, associating oneself with professional associations, career resource centres, engaging with professionals and scholars not forgetting to join alumnae resource networks, taking part in informal interviewing and job shadowing (observing professionals at work) among others. Self-knowledge gained during assessment can also be utilized in identifying the career options that will suit your interests and skills. Understand your career aspirations, set personal goals and utilize available resources in attaining them. 3) DECISION MAKING FOR CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROCESS : At this point, all your interests are fully explored and values related to majors or different career aspirations. For easy decision making, narrow down all career majors and options and evaluate your final options. Important questions include; o   Are there more questions that will help me make the final decision? o   Is the available information sufficient in enabling me making the final decision? o   What other kinds of information do I need? o   Have I fully taken into consideration my skills, interests, values and career aspirations? This stage can be as challenging; a reason why most people keep it off as much as possible. It is again a huge commitment as elimination on other career fields is done once the decision is made. Therefore, it is important to have all the information required in helping you make the right decision.  4) TAKE ACTION FOR CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROCESS : Information collection and analysis is very important but will remain void if no action is taken. This stage, therefore, ensures one is headed in the right direction of the desired career path. Develop a career action plan and stick to it to the latter.  When setting goals, consider the SMART approach, That is; o   S-specific o   M-measurable o   A-attainable o   R-realistic o   T-time based  The SMART goals approach is essential in helping you set feasible objectives or goals depending on the chosen career path. Other questions that are essential at this stage include; o   Do I have the necessary skills for the chosen major or career?   o   If not, how do I gain the relevant skills required by employers?   o   Which majors are most relevant to my career goals?    5) DECISION EVALUATION FOR CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROCESS :  It is very important to evaluate your career decision regularly so as to ensure compatibility with your interests, values and priorities. At times various stages of the career development process can be repeated since interests, values and priorities may shift or change with time thus affecting your view of different career choices.  It is therefore not bad to change your perception on a given career especially in the early stages but it is important to note that constant changes are never advisable considering the time input and other resources required. Other factors to remember In career development process, it is essential to remember that; o   There are lots of career paths to explore therefore choosing a major in college does not in anyway pre determine one’s entire profession o   Priorities, skills and interests are not fixed, they change or shift over time o   Career development and decision making is not a one off, they take time o   Career development is not an event but a proactive process o   Do not only focus on your college major, explore other areas of interest, be open minded and open up to opportunities that come up o   All experiences impact on career choices, whether they are work related or not o   No career meets all needs, the best thing is to choose one with the best fit o   When developing the career action plan, always focus on your end goals. This process is meant to offer guidance on how to start and build your career to the peak. Career development seizes when one reaches his/her ‘career comfort zone’. Even after landing that dream job it is always important too; o  Continue with self-assessments: thisensures you are always on track to achieving your goals o   Explore options: know how your current career path prepares you for the next step in life and always have a backup plan in case something goes wrong o   Continue dreaming: it is always difficult to get through the day if you not working towards anything. Always work and strive toward something o   Work toward attaining goals: have short term, long term and career lifetime plans o   Grow your network: never stop networking, always work toward forming strategic relationships o   Mentor and be mentored: you are never too old to be mentored. Also, find someone to show and guide through your career path.
