CoWIN

The word CoWIN stands for Covid Vaccine Intelligence Network which is a web portal created by the Indian government for the registration of COVID-19 vaccination. The website helps to book the slots for the COVID-19 vaccine available in nearby areas. The vaccination certificates are provided by the website which was very useful for the beneficiaries during the COVID-19 pandemic. Digi locker is software that is convenient for storing the COVID-19 vaccination certificate. The CoWIN app was available for public use from March 2021 and is controlled by government officials.

Some key features of CoWIN are user management, inventory management, temperature monitoring, beneficiary registration, session planning, vaccination, and analytics/ dashboards. The CoWIN app focuses on Product, Place, and People ensuring that everyone is vaccinated. Users can access the CoWIN app via tablet, desktop, laptop, and mobile phones which helps to meet their variety of needs. Users who are registered receive automated text messages on their registered mobile phone numbers regarding the second dose and they also receive links to access their digital COVID-19 vaccination certificate. The citizens who are fully vaccinated are eligible to take the precautionary dose at their nearest vaccination center. It is very essential to spread awareness about the CoWIN app so that it can reach millions of citizens. The CoWIN app gives a helping hand in monitoring and recording all the data for present and future use. The app is user-friendly as it consists of 12 different languages so that people from different parts of the country can understand and fill out the application. This softens the way of handling the CoWIN app.

The govt commenced vaccination drive for 18 years and above. Registration for 18 plus for vaccination against COVID-19 commenced on April 28.

There are many fake CoWIN apps for which the Health Ministry issues alert. Several fake CoWIN apps created by hackers can be used for scams. The fake apps ask users for their mobile phone numbers, bank account details, Aadhar card, etc., thus leading to fraud and personal data scams. There are still many people who are unaware of this app. People in rural areas are not able to get access to this app due to a lack of education and less modernization. CoWIN is a powerful example of how digital technologies can be used to scale public health programs.

People who do not have access to the internet can walk into any health facility and get themselves registered on CoWIN. CoWIN can be customized for different locations as its digital software is built on an open platform. CoWIN has helped 90 percent of India’s population get vaccinated with at least one dose, as of December 2021. India is now working on taking CoWIN global to let other countries benefit from such an efficient system.
