Music comes naturally for kids during their early years. Kids tend to clap along with songs, repeat rhymes, dance along to music, or sing their favourite songs without realising how many things they are learning from such basic activities. Music becomes a great tool for developing various developmental aspects of early childhood education in preschools and daycare.

Various skills such as listening, responding, moving, and communication are developed when kids listen to music, learn rhymes and lyrics, and participate in singing and dancing. Musical activities that teachers organise in preschool programs allow children to develop all of these important skills.

Music Supports Memory Development

Many songs and rhymes have patterns and repetition, which make it easier for young children to memorise them. Consistent repetition of a song will make it easier for children to memorise words and sequences.

Some things that can be easily memorised using songs include:

  1. Lyrics and simple words
  2. Numerical sequences by way of counting songs
  3. Alphabet sequences
  4. Names of different things and animals
  5. Memorising actions linked with particular songs

In this way, the skills of listening and memorisation are improved in children in a fun way rather than through strict memorisation exercises.

Rhythm Helps Children Understand Patterns

Rhythm is an element that helps children learn patterns using sounds, actions, and repetitions. Actions like clapping, drumming, marching, and moving to rhythm make children aware that sounds can be arranged into a specific pattern.

Some of the things children can learn from these activities include:

  1. Recognising simple patterns
  2. Staying on a beat
  3. Becoming more coordinated
  4. Paying attention to sounds
  5. Anticipating the next sound

Learning patterns can also be helpful in future learning such as mathematics and reading.

Music Encourages Language Development

Singing helps children be introduced to new words and sentence structures through music. When children are made to listen to and sing songs with certain words, they become acquainted with how to pronounce and use them.

With music, children can:

  1. Add words to their vocabularies
  2. Improve pronunciation
  3. Practice sentence structures
  4. Gain better listening skills
  5. Find confidence in themselves

Nursery rhymes are especially effective due to their repetition and rhythm.

Music and Movement Improve Coordination

Music is more than just listening and singing. The use of movement plays an integral role in most of the preschool musical activities. These activities include clapping, jumping, marching, dancing, or any form of movement depending on the rhythm of the songs.

Some of the skills developed by the activities include:

  1. Gross motor development
  2. Balance and coordination
  3. Body awareness
  4. Timing
  5. Physical confidence

Through music and movement, children learn using their mind and body.

Musical Activities Encourage Social Interaction

Music activities in groups provide chances for children to learn and engage together. As they sing welcome songs, play musical instruments or act as a group, they learn how to act in coordination with others.

By doing this, children learn how to:

  1. Alternate
  2. Observe other classmates
  3. Follow directions of the group
  4. Cooperate with others
  5. Celebrate group activity

Thus, music activities can provide children with a positive social atmosphere where they feel connected to each other.

Music Encourages Creativity

Preschool music is not just about having fun and being entertained. It helps the little learners improve memory skills, develop language abilities, improve coordination, gain communication skills, and learn to control their emotions through singing, rhymes, rhythm, dancing, and engaging musical activities.

Those interested in how engaging activities relate to a preschooler’s day can learn more from the article called How Does Preschool Help Children Become Better Decision Makers? that sheds light on a usual day at Elzee Preschool and daycare.
