One of the most common questions parents ask today is when exactly their child should start preschool. With the introduction of the National Education Policy 2020, admission age criteria across India have become clearer and more uniform. Still, many parents remain unsure about the correct class for their child, especially while planning admissions for the 2026 to 2027 academic year.
Early childhood is a crucial phase of life. Research shows that more than eighty five percent of brain development happens before the age of six. This makes the early years extremely important for emotional growth, social skills, curiosity, language development, and confidence. Choosing the right entry age ensures that learning feels joyful and not rushed.
The National Education Policy introduced a new education structure known as the five plus three plus three plus four system. The first five years form the Foundational Stage, which includes preschool and the early primary years.
This stage consists of three years of preschool
a. Nursery
b. Junior Kindergarten
c. Senior Kindergarten
Followed by two years of primary education in Class One and Class Two.
The focus during these early years is not rote learning or academic pressure. NEP strongly promotes learning through play, storytelling, music, movement, hands-on activities, conversations, and real-life experiences. The goal is to build strong foundations in communication, confidence, curiosity, and social interaction.
As per NEP-aligned guidelines, the standard age criteria for preschool admissions are as follows.
Nursery
A child should be three years old by 31 March 2026
The eligible birth period is January 2023 to December 2023
Nursery helps toddlers adjust to a structured environment outside home. Children learn through play based activities that support language exposure, motor skills, social bonding, and comfort with routines.
Junior Kindergarten
A child should be four years old by 31 March 2026
The eligible birth period is January 2022 to December 2022
Junior Kindergarten introduces early literacy and numeracy gently and playfully. Children explore sounds, pre-writing skills, numbers, patterns, and expressive activities while continuing to learn through movement and play.
Senior Kindergarten
A child should be five years of age by 31 March 2026
The eligible birth period is January 2021 to December 2021
Senior Kindergarten prepares children for Class One. The focus is on reading readiness, number sense, vocabulary, thinking skills, creativity, independence, and structured classroom routines, all delivered through engaging activities.
The age criteria outlined under NEP are based on extensive research in child development. When children are admitted at the right age, they are emotionally prepared, socially confident, and developmentally ready to learn.
Following the guidelines helps ensure that learning remains stress free, children progress at a natural pace, and they enter formal schooling with the right foundation. It also prevents unnecessary pressure and comparison during the early years.
